Chennai, May 2025: At an age when most teenagers are focused on exams, extracurricular, and social media trends, 17-year-old Arick Agarwal is redefining what it means to make a difference. With a deep sense of empathy and purpose, Arick has founded the NewSight Foundation — a grassroots initiative committed to bringing free eye care and awareness to underprivileged communities across Chennai.
A Journey Sparked by Compassion
This inspiring mission began with a single act of empathy. When a house help at Arick’s home tripped and injured herself due to poor vision, Arick and his mother rushed her to a nearby clinic. The doctor explained she had been silently suffering from deteriorating eyesight — a common reality in low-income communities where access and awareness around eye care are often limited.
That moment changed everything for Arick.
“I couldn’t stop thinking about how many others might be silently suffering, just because they don’t know what’s wrong — or don’t feel they can do anything about it,” said Arick. “It made me realize that eye health isn’t just a medical issue, it’s also an awareness issue.”
Turning Vision into Action
Moved by this realization, Arick set out to build something impactful. He envisioned a platform that not only offered free eye screenings and diagnostics but also educated individuals on the importance of early detection and routine checkups. Thus, the NewSight Foundation was born.
In just a short time, Arick and a growing team of volunteers have successfully conducted three eye screening camps, reaching over 790 individuals in underserved Chennai neighbourhoods. These camps include vision assessments, diagnostic scans, and — crucially — one-on-one education that empowers patients to understand and act on their results.
“We don’t want to just give people a report and send them off. We want to help them understand what it means and how they can protect their vision,” Arick said.
From logistics and setup to assisting patients and answering questions, Arick is hands-on at every camp — a testament to his passion and purpose.
Expanding Focus: Eye Health Awareness for Children and Parents
Having focused primarily on older adults so far, NewSight Foundation is now expanding its reach to younger audiences. The next big step is to conduct eye camps in schools serving underprivileged children, ensuring vision problems are caught and addressed at an early age.
“If kids can get screened early, we can prevent so many long-term issues. It’s also important that parents understand what to look out for in their children. Sometimes, all it takes is a little awareness to make a huge difference,” Arick emphasized.
Through this expansion, the foundation hopes to create lasting awareness among young children and their parents, making eye care a lifelong habit rather than a last resort.
Expanding Reach: Eye Camps for Underprivileged Students
Looking ahead, NewSight Foundation is set to launch dedicated eye screening programs in schools for underprivileged children. These camps aim to identify vision issues early — before they impact learning, development, or self-esteem.
“A simple scan can save someone’s sight — or even their life,” Arick says.
