Chennai: KCG College of Technology inaugurated its AICTE IDEA (Idea, Development, Evaluation & Application) Lab, a flagship initiative designed to revolutionise experiential learning and foster a culture of homegrown innovation. Formally inaugurated by Mr. Miyata Kenji, Deputy Consul General of Japan in Chennai, the facility marks a significant milestone in the institution’s commitment to producing industry-ready engineers.
The inauguration was held in the presence of Mr. V M Muralidharan, Chairman of the Ethiraj College Trust, Strategic Advisor to the Bahwan CyberTek Group, and Chairman of the ALERT NGO, alongside management dignitaries including Dr. Anand Jacob Varghese, Chairman of HGI, Dr. Annie Jacob, Director of KCG College of Technology, Mr.Enid Verghese Jacob, Deputy Director of HGI, and Dr. M Muthukannan, Principal of KCG College of Technology.
In alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) and the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission, the lab functions as a centralized hub integrated with cutting-edge technology to foster innovation. This specialized facility empowers users through a suite of advanced tools, utilizing 3D printers and scanners for rapid prototyping, CNC routers and laser cutters for precision fabrication, and PCB prototyping machines to drive advanced electronics development.
The IDEA Lab, established with a total investment of Rs 90 Lakhs, is a collaborative venture co-funded by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), KCG College of Technology, and industry partners, with each contributing Rs 30 Lakhs. The lab is notably supported by FANUC, a global leader in automation and robotics, ensuring students have access to world-class industrial expertise.
By providing these tools under one roof, the lab encourages students to move beyond theoretical textbooks and engage in “learning by doing,” transforming abstract concepts into tangible products.
Mr Miyata Kenji, the Deputy Consul General of Japan said, “I am honoured to witness the launch of the IDEA Lab, which stands as a strong testament to the growing synergy between Indian academia and global technological standards. Innovation is the universal language of progress. By equipping young minds with advanced tools and exposure to industry leaders like FANUC, this initiative moves beyond traditional engineering education and empowers a new generation of creators who can contribute meaningfully to the global manufacturing landscape.”
Supporting this vision, Dr Anand Jacob Varghese, Chairman of the Hindustan Group of Institutions (HGI) said, “The AICTE IDEA Lab represents a strategic step in bridging the gap between classroom learning and industrial application. Our ₹90-lakh investment reflects our commitment to fostering imagination, innovation, and resourcefulness among students. The lab provides a dedicated space for design thinking, where students can experiment, fail fast, learn quickly, and ultimately develop solutions that align with the ‘Make in India’ vision.”
Furthermore, the IDEA Lab is positioned to become the heart of the college’s incubation and entrepreneurship efforts, effectively strengthening the local startup ecosystem. By imparting essential skills such as critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving, the lab ensures that graduates are not merely seeking employment but are fully capable of creating it.
